This was a commission of firsts; It was my first cover story illustration, and Cedars-Sinai, the company that publishes ‘Discoveries’ is my first U.S. based client.

The article I was to illustrate was about scientific advances in Cancer treatments and preventative measures. Given the quite bleak subject matter I felt it was important to approach the issue with caution. However, many of my clients approach me due to the humour and colour I try to inject into my work, so one of my biggest challenges was to try to put a ‘fun’ spin on a really dry and sensitive article.
The advice I received from Creative Director, Monica Schlaug, was that she tends to prefer visual metaphors rather than more literal interpretations of the text. My image is a response to part of the article that discusses the possibility of preventing cancer by “…tackling the cells at a molecular level.”
I particularly enjoyed working on this job; I am really happy with how the final image turned out and it was a welcome change to work in alternating time zones. I found I functioned a lot more productively when waking up to feedback, rather than spending an afternoon, or even a day waiting anxiously to hear the inbox ‘ping’. I welcome more transatlantic clients with open arms.
